Here's the remarkable thing about the alphabet song: it was never intended to last a lifetime. It was a tool to help small children get through a difficult early learning task. And yet, ask any adult — in any English-speaking country, of any age — to recite the alphabet quickly, and almost every one of them will feel the melody firing in their head. Many will actually move their lips.
